Illinois RPS Progress
Illinois has made significant progress in expanding renewable energy, largely due to a strong Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS), which sets ambitious renewable energy goals for the state. The RPS is a cornerstone of Illinois’ clean energy goals, supporting programs and procurements that increase renewable generation statewide.
Through implementation of the 2017 Future Energy Jobs Act (FEJA) and the 2021 Climate & Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA), Illinois experienced a significant increase in the rate of new solar project development. Additionally, these landmark policies have expanded access to clean energy opportunities for communities that have historically faced systemic environmental and economic disparities.
Building on this momentum, the 2026 Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act (CRGA), strengthens grid reliability, supports the integration of energy storage, and enables continued growth of Illinois' renewable energy portfolio, helping create a more resilient, sustainable energy future for all Illinoisans.
